Interprofessional Practice and Education (IPE) is the a term that encompasses interprofessional education, or IPE, and interprofessional practice, or IPP.
It is a philosophical stance, which embraces life long learning, adult learning principles and an ongoing, active learning process between different cultures and health care disciplines. The goal is to provide learners experiences and knowledge that will allow them to work better in interprofessional groups which supports patient-centered care and better patient outcomes.
Key elements of IPE are:
- Two or more professions learning with, from, AND about each other
- Results in improved quality of care beyond that which each profession can accomplish on its own or even additively if each profession performs at its individual best
- Characterized by interdependency across professions to accomplish best outcomes
- Recognizes, respects, and builds upon the distinctive contributions of each profession
