The Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center (IU IPE) closed out a strong week at the 2026 National Academies of Practice Annual Meeting and Forum with national recognition for one of its collaborative practice models.

During Saturday evening’s awards ceremony, the Comprehensive Pain Assessment Clinic (CoPAC) received the Creativity in Practice & Education Award, recognizing an interprofessional model that reimagines chronic pain care while creating meaningful learning opportunities for future providers.

Dr. April D. Newton, Dr. Carol Dellinger, and others accepted the award on behalf of CoPAC and the many faculty, staff, learners, and community partners who have contributed to the clinic’s continued development and impact.

Originally launched in 2019, CoPAC was built as a team-based approach to chronic pain assessment, bringing together providers, learners, and staff from multiple health and social care professions. Rather than focusing solely on opioid prescribing, the clinic addresses pain-related health concerns alongside mental health, physical health, and social factors through coordinated interprofessional care.

That model has produced measurable results. Since its launch, CoPAC has served 198 unique patients across 181 clinic afternoons. Since September 2023 alone, providers and learners have completed more than 500 patient encounters. Reported outcomes include a 16 percent decrease in average opioid use, along with improvements in pain interference, depression, emotional support, and opioid misuse risk.

Beyond patient outcomes, CoPAC continues to serve as a learning environment where students and professionals engage directly with the complexity of collaborative care in practice.

The award added another national moment to a week in which IU IPE contributed across multiple areas of the forum, including Dr. Barbara Maxwell’s keynote address, a live Stage 2 demonstration from the Interprofessional Core Curriculum, a tour of The Simulation Center, and participation in the lightning talk, “Belonging and Mattering in the Interprofessional Healthcare Workplace.”

Together, those moments reflected IU IPE’s continued contribution to national conversations around collaborative practice, curriculum innovation, and interprofessional education.

IP Core operates as a hybrid-longitudinal model: a curriculum in which students progress through four structured stages that move from a foundational understanding of values and ethics to applied, team-based behaviors in increasingly complex settings.

Measured Development

Assessment of student learning follows a modified Kirkpatrick framework, examining:

	Learner reaction
	Attitude change
	Knowledge and skill acquisition
	Demonstrated behavior change

In Stage 1, learner reaction scores averaged above 4.7 on a 5-point scale, reflecting strong engagement with foundational concepts of interprofessional collaboration

Stage 2 team competency scores averaged in the mid-4 range across communication, leadership, mutual support, and situation monitoring, indicating meaningful development of applied collaborative skills

By Stage 3, behavioral indicators of collective competence averaged above 4.2, reinforcing the curriculum’s longitudinal impact

Across Stages 1–3, students demonstrated continued growth in core collaborative competencies, including interprofessional communication, leadership, mutual support, situation monitoring, and role clarity within team environments.

One Stage 2 student reflected on their experience working in a team-based scenario:

“It did seem like people just wanted to make a difference and wanted to help… People just want to help and they just want to make the world a better place.”

Stage 1 focuses on why collaboration matters.
Stage 2 emphasizes structured skill-building.
Stage 3 advances collective competence, requiring learners to function as part of coordinated teams.

The curriculum’s design intentionally reinforces these competencies over time, recognizing that collaborative practice is strengthened through repetition, reflection, and application.

The report also outlines facilitator engagement and statewide implementation efforts that support consistency across disciplines and campuses.

The 2024–2025 outcomes reflect a continued emphasis on measurable development and intentional curriculum design.

The full annual report has been made available to our partner programs and will soon be available to the public.

The Collaborative Topics Series supports interprofessional education by creating environments where students practice collaboration, communication, and systems thinking. These in-person workshops complement academic coursework by connecting theory to lived experience and community context.
Students leave with practical insights, expanded professional awareness, and a deeper understanding of how collaboration improves outcomes for individuals and populations.
Fall 2025 Impact: 565 Unique Learners Across 21 Departments

<span style="font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; font-family: BentonSans, -apple-system, "system-ui", "Segoe UI", Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Open Sans", "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">
The numbers are in, and IU IPE's Collaborative Topics series continued its expansion in 2025. Reach, offerings, and the list of participating departments have grown year over year. In Fall 2025, IU IPE's Collaborative Topics engaged 565 unique learners across 15 unique sessions, resulting in 584 total participations across the semester.

Learners represented 21 unique departments, with 31 total department listings recorded across sessions. Some experiences, like the Veteran Trauma and Transparency Program, involve multiple sessions.

These numbers do not include pilot programming options, such as the Cycle of Addictions Experience for High Schools.

Fall 2025 at a glance

565 unique learners
584 total participations
15 sessions delivered
15 unique sessions (distinct offerings)
21 unique departments represented
31 total department listings across sessions

Why these numbers matter

Collaboration is built through repeated exposure, shared practice, and structured interaction. This semester’s participation shows both reach (total participations) and depth (repeat engagement across departments and sessions), while maintaining strong cross-disciplinary breadth.

When learners train alongside peers from other fields, they strengthen habits that matter in real settings:
Clear communication
Role clarity and respect
Team-based problem solving
Shared accountability for outcomes

Looking ahead

IU IPE will continue to use participation data to strengthen programming, expand cross-department engagement, and support learning experiences that prepare students for complex, collaborative work.

When Dr. April D. Newton, PT, DPT, PhD, FNAP, received the Outstanding Commitment to Community Engagement and Service award from the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine, her peers described her impact with one word: collaborative.

As Director of Interprofessional Practice Development at the IU Interprofessional Practice and Education Center, Dr. Newton has built spaces where students and providers learn from, and with, each other. She leads the Buprenorphine Clinic, Comprehensive Pain Assessment Clinic, and Well Child and Oral Health Clinic, each designed to model true team-based care. Family medicine residents work alongside learners and professionals from chaplaincy, dentistry, medical assisting, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and social work, gaining firsthand experience in how collaboration improves care for patients and families.

Beyond the clinic, Dr. Newton’s commitment extends deep into the community. She mentors health-professions learners through the IU Student Outreach Clinic, ensuring patients without access to care still receive it through compassionate, team-based service. She is also a founding figure behind Breaking the Cycle of Addiction: A Collaborative Recovery Experience, engaging students across IU campuses, Indiana AHEC regions, and professional conferences in meaningful conversations about addiction, recovery, and empathy.

Each year, she co-leads the Rural Health Wellness Fairs alongside colleagues from the Center for Rural Engagement, bringing preventive care and interprofessional collaboration to communities across Indiana.

Dr. Newton’s work embodies IU IPE’s mission to improve the lives of people and populations through collaboration. Her leadership shows how bringing diverse professions together transforms not just learning, but lives.

Dr. Weber Recieves the Teaching Impact Award

We’re proud to celebrate Dr. Zach Weber, clinical professor at the Purdue College of Pharmacy and Assistant Dean for Education at the Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center (IU IPE), as a recipient of IU School of Medicine’s Teaching Impact Award.

This honor recognizes excellence in teaching among volunteer and adjunct faculty who dedicate their time to educating IU medical students and residents. While many deserving educators have been recognized over the years, few recipients have come from outside the physician community, making Dr. Weber’s selection especially meaningful for pharmacy and other health professions.

Through Dr. Weber's work with IU IPE, he has helped ensure medical students learn alongside pharmacy, nursing, social work, and other health/social/public health profession learners. These collaborative experiences prepare students to be collaborative-ready team members; skilled in their craft and also in communication, empathy, and teamwork.

Reflecting on the honor, Dr. Weber shared: “The cool thing about being honored with this award for me is to know that the hard work from me and my team is leading to a positive impact on the education of medical students. Specifically, this impact is coming through their opportunity to collaborate with other health profession learners through our work in interprofessional education and ensuring medical students will be collaborative-ready team members when they enter practice."

The “MLK Day of Vision” is held by IU Optometry and the Lions Club. The Bloomington Salvation Army scheduled the patients for the day while the Bloomington Lions Club funded the glasses, all services were provided by IU School of Optometry. This event consists of optometry students and clinical faculty participating with various other health sciences disciplines. This year, IU Nursing provided students and faculty who screened for A1c levels and Blood Pressure. Thanks to their participation, some patients screened in pre-diabetic ranges, with one referred to further follow-up care.

This authentic interprofessional experience served community members aged 5 to 78, resulting in 45 eye exams and over 30 pairs of glasses being ordered. Eligibility requirements were that patients had to be low-income with no vision insurance and more than 2 years since their last exam.

Thanks to participation from the IU School of Optometry, IU School of Nursing, Bloomington Lions Club, and Bloomington Salvation Army, this collaborative effort exemplified the transformative power of service and solidarity in addressing healthcare disparities within our communities.

Our mission was clear: to widen our reach, diversify our educational programs, and shape the future landscape of interprofessional practice and education.

At the heart of IU IPE’s initiatives lies the innovative TEACH curriculum, a groundbreaking initiative seamlessly woven into learner's existing courses. This curriculum opens doors for students, allowing them to interact and learn alongside peers from diverse health and social care specialties. Through collaborations with esteemed institutions such as Butler, Ball State, Purdue, St. Mary of the Woods, Indiana State University, and Manchester College, approximately 5,150 participants were immersed in TEACH's rich tapestry of experiences and perspectives throughout 2023.

The year also formally introduced the Collaborative Topics series, an inclusive platform designed for students, practitioners, faculty, staff, and community members. Over 600 participants took advantage of these sessions which delve deep into real-world scenarios encountered in professional settings and everyday life. Programs like “Social Determinants of Health” and the “Voices of Healing Experience” shed light on the profound impact that collaboration, or its absence, can have on patients' lives. Meanwhile, workshops such as the “Veteran Trauma and Transparency Program” and “Exploitation Awareness and Prevention” equipped participants with crucial skills to recognize and mitigate harmful situations affecting individuals or entire communities.

Beyond our statewide engagement, IU IPE took significant strides on the global stage. Our contributions extended across borders, including over 30 presentations to national and international audiences as well asnumerous published works. A remarkable highlight was the keynote address delivered by our esteemed director, Dr. Barbara Maxwell, at All Together

Building upon over a decade of international efforts following the release of the World Health Organization’s Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (WHO 2010), it serves as a local, national, and international call to advocacy and action. Calling on education and practice leaders, and policymakers across the health, social care, and public health systems, the declaration offers concrete examples of policies and actions to promote interprofessional education and collaborative practice, with the goal of ensuring optimal health and well-being for people and populations across diverse national and international settings.

The declaration emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and local leadership and reflects the collective commitment of a global community dedicated to improving healthcare and well-being for all. Members of the Policy and Global Impact Working Groups of Interprofessional.Global prepared the declaration. It was subsequently endorsed through a consensus-based review and commentary process conducted across the organization's global community, representing more than 100 countries and 11 regional networks. The declaration signifies a collective commitment to the cause of interprofessional collaborative practice and education.

Students beginning their interprofessional training this Fall won’t notice, but they will be the first to participate in a seismic shift to how interprofessional education (IPE) is delivered to Indiana University and IU IPE partner schools. A total revamp of the former TEACH curriculum is being implemented, and students entering the Orientation phase will be the first to receive this rollout.

Faculty members familiar with TEACH will notice significant changes to how the Orientation phase is handled. The most obvious will be that a member of the Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center (IU IPE) team will be visiting classrooms that are a part of the curriculum to introduce students to the center and the new offerings. This new approach allows students and faculty members to place a face to the curriculum. It also enables IU IPE to lay out the subsequent phases of collaborative-based learning while taking questions from students, allowing those who may need to become more familiar with interprofessional collaboration to receive information straight from the source.

These changes will not affect students already working through the old TEACH curriculum. They will continue on the path they’ve already begun with no disruptions to the quality or delivery of their interprofessional journey. The TEACH curriculum has proven to be an effective way to deliver successful collaborative experiences. This overhaul is a natural evolution brought on by evidence-based learning techniques. These new changes will only affect those students who have yet to enter the Orientation phase.

A new approach to interprofessional curriculum is only possible with the help and support of our stakeholders and faculty members. To better assist them with the upcoming changes, Dr. Julie LaMothe is creating new materials, including a brand new Canvas site, to help train those who facilitate these events.

“ The IU IPE Center has developed a new Facilitator Development Canvas site and live virtual sessions on Zoom to ensure that Facilitators have the necessary skills to guide students through this important Team Education Collaboration in Healthcare (TEACH) curriculum. Facilitators can be any faculty member, preceptor, alumni, graduate student, fellow, resident, licensed practitioner, or other associated with a health science program. The Faculty Development site also includes resource sharing, regular updates, collaboration opportunities, and highlighted IPE facilitator champions.” - Dr. Lamothe.

Some classes have already begun this new orientation rollout, while others will start their participation over the coming weeks. IU IPE has been in regular contact with all partner schools and has set dates to visit nearly every class. If you’re a part of the IU IPE curriculum and have not yet been contacted by either your department or IU IPE itself, email us at ipectr@iu.edu.

This immersive experience will take place on September 27th and 28th. Each evening will begin with an exhibition of the “Scarred for Life” series from 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm before a keynote address from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm.

Attendees will view various captivating displays that delve into the profound theme of healing and resilience. Over the course of nearly two decades, Mr. Meyer has meticulously crafted a poignant body of work under the title "Scarred for Life." Each artwork within this collection encapsulates the profound experiences of individuals whose lives have been indelibly marked by medical challenges, complemented by meticulously captured photographic portraits and eloquent narratives authored by the subjects.

Seating for the keynote portion of this event is limited. The entire university and public are invited to attend: https://go.iu.edu/4Qcj

On Sept. 27th, we will focus on the "Scarred for Life" project—a deeply personal endeavor for Mr. Meyer. Drawing inspiration from his own poignant journey with Gaucher's disease, Ted Meyer's artistic odyssey served as a therapeutic outlet during prolonged hospital stays and the arduous navigation of his condition's physical and emotional complexities. The inception of this compelling artistic voyage was catalyzed by an encounter with an individual whose life was reshaped by a spinal cord injury.

The second evening of the event, Sept. 28th, will witness a collaboration between Mr. Meyer, Dr. Debra Rusk from Indiana University, and others. Dr. Rusk’s lifelong battle with lung disease eventually led to her receiving a double lung transplant. Her unique perspective as both a transplant patient and a practicing medical professional lends authority to the voice of the patients.

"Voices of Healing" Featuring Ted Meyer, presented by the Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center—promises a deeply enriching exploration of resilience, medical complexities, and the eloquent language of art in conveying profound human narratives.

Her belief that collaborative practice creates a more positive experience for practitioners, patients, and their families led to her deliberate implementation of IPE into the nursing curriculum and to actively promote a collaborative environment. Dr. LaMothe's passion for IPE was enhanced through her role as project manager of a three-year Health Resource and Service Administration (HRSA) grant focused on interprofessional collaborative practice at IU Health and in Indiana primary care clinics.

Dr. LaMothe has published on numerous topics, including the healthcare transition of children and youth with special healthcare needs, evidence-based nursing and interprofessional education and practice. She has been active in the IPE Center as a member of the Academic Steering Committee before accepting her new position beginning July 1st.

IU IPE is thrilled to welcome Julie to the team and excited to see all of the new collaborative opportunities she brings.

April was National Interprofessional Healthcare Month and brought the annual National Academies of Practice Forum in Washington, D.C. This year's NAP Forum gave IU IPE a spotlight to share their work and celebrate career milestones.

Specifically, IU IPE’s Dr. Zach Weber was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow alongside frequent IU IPE collaborator Dr. Sarah Gordon from Manchester University.

To become a Distinguished Fellow with NAP, you must be nominated by an active NAP fellow, submit an application, receive a majority vote from the members of the NAP Council, be a legal US citizen, and have a career spanning a decade or more in your chosen profession which demonstrates a commitment to interprofessional education.

When asked for his thoughts on this accomplishment, Dr. Weber stated:

From 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm on March 7th-9th, Mr. Meyer will hold exhibition time in the Statewide West room before transitioning to the Statewide East room for presentations. Each night will offer a unique experience. This event is open to the public, but seating is limited.

Registration for this experience can be found at this link: https://go.iu.edu/4E8Z

Mr. Meyer has spent nearly 20 years creating a graphic yet beautiful depiction of people’s suddenly altered bodies and the resulting scars in an ever-enlarging collection of artworks entitled “Scarred for Life.” Each image – accompanied by a photographic portrait taken by Meyer and a written story by his subject - tells a unique and intriguing story of medical crisis, resilience, and healing. For this three-night engagement, Mr. Meyer will be showcasing pieces that focus on scars caused due to genetic disease.

Night one of this experience is dedicated to the Scarred for Life project. Since childhood, Ted, who has Gaucher's disease, turned to art to help him get through long hospital stays and to express the distress he felt from the constant pain of his disease. When medical advances offered Meyer respite from his condition, he kept making art but was unsure of the direction to take. A chance meeting with a woman who had suffered a spinal cord injury led to his new direction: the Scarred for Life project.

The second night will see Mr. Meyer joined by IU’s Dr. Debra Rusk and artist Dominic Quagliozzi. Dominic’s work is primarily autobiographically and follows his health and medical experiences, having Cystic Fibrosis and being a recipient of a double lung transplant. In keeping consistent with his body-centered patient experiences, he uses his body heavily throughout his work while stripping away privacy in attempts to bring out a more public dialogue about chronic illness and disability.

Join artist Ted Meyer for three nights of genetics, art, and scars at the Indiana Memorial Union. Since childhood, Mr. Meyer turned to art to help him get through long hospital stays and to express the distress he felt from the constant pain of Gaucher's disease. When medical advances offered Meyer respite from his condition, he kept making art but was unsure of the direction to take. A chance meeting with a woman who had suffered a spinal cord injury led to his new direction: the “Scarred for Life” project.

Mr. Meyer is the Artist in Residence at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine and a curator of the Hoyt Gallery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He’s spent over two decades creating a graphic yet beautiful depiction of people’s suddenly altered bodies and the resulting scars in an ever-enlarging collection of artworks entitled “Scarred for Life.” This project continues to grow and now consists of almost 100 artistically enhanced monoprints taken directly from the scarred skin of his subjects. Each image – accompanied by a photographic portrait taken by Ted and a written story by his subject - tells a unique and intriguing story of medical crisis, resilience, and healing.

Over three days, Mr. Meyer will present in Bloomington, IN, at the Indiana Memorial Unions’ Statewide East and West rooms. Each night will begin at 6:00pm with hors d'oeuvres and exhibition time. Exhibitions will consist of the “Scarred for Life '' project and a selection of his favorite work by patients/artists that he has exhibited at the Hoyt Gallery.

At 7:00pm guests will be encouraged to join Ted for a different session each night. Night one will be all about “Scarred for Life.” On night two, Mr. Meyer will be joined by Dominic Quagliozzi, who is diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, for a discussion entitled “Don’t be Afraid to Heal.” On the third night, we invite those attending to share their stories with Ted and the audience.

While in Bloomington, Mr. Meyer is offering screen printing for anyone wishing to have their scar memorialized. We use case scenarios to reveal the story of individuals living with or touched by substance use disorder. Participants learn about resources for future interactions with patients/clients and interact with community partners during breakout sessions who guide learners through the experience. Educational materials and resources are provided by the various participating agencies.

Community partners provide guidance to participants throughout the Cycle of Addiction Experienceas during a collaborative process of discovery. These partners deliver information about their agency/organizations’ roles and responsibilities related to the individual case scenarios. This partner-participant interaction allows for identification of how to utilize resources and systems available in different communities.

Dr. Daulton is joined by IU IPE faculty Dr. Zach Weber and Dr. April D. Newton, as well as former IU IPE team members Dr. Laura Romito and Dr. Barbara Friesth on "Raising the Bar: Evolution of a Statewide Interprofessional Education Program Following a 5-Year Outcomes Evaluation."

The article looks at the first five years of IU IPE's existence and areas in which a large-scale program like IU IPE can work to improve curricula and interprofessional relationships with partner schools. Starting in 2015, IU IPE has been a leader in interprofessional practice and education, engaging approximately 20 health professions programs, 10 partnering institutions, and 8000 learners in interprofessional practice and education opportunities across Indiana during an academic year. This article looks at how an external university evaluation helped clarify IU IPE's goals, strategies, and tactics prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and the steps IU IPE has already taken to accomplish these tasks.

In December of 2022, the Journal of Interprofessional Education and Practice will publish “Communication tools and strategies for interprofessional teamwork in a comprehensive pain assessment clinic in primary care” This look at CoPAC will give insight into what’s worked and what can be improved as CoPAC continues to go forward. The article gives in depth analysis of the communication techniques utilized in this team based care clinic.

CoPAC was founded in 2019 as part of the Indiana University Grand Challenge: Responding to the Addictions Crisis to provide a team-based approach to assessing the health, mental health, physical, social and spiritual concerns of people living with chronic pain. This interprofessional clinic brings together specialists, university staff, and students from 10 different professions to develop a functional and dynamic model of teamwork, including communication strategies to facilitate assessment and provide recommendations to patients.

The SGP is worth up to $5,000 of matchable monies meant to provide faculty with funding, consultation, and support to develop and implement new educational programming into IU IPEs’ statewide TEACH curriculum.

TEACH is offered to health and social care profession students across nine Indiana University campuses. This interactive programming engages students across multiple professions by creating opportunities that emulate real-world, team-based scenarios. By producing team-based curricula, students from different disciplines learn to collaborate while improving patient health outcomes.

“The Seed Grant Program supports faculty in developing and implementing new interprofessional education and collaborative practice experiences. These experiences can be tailored toward important and impactful activities for the participating health and social care learners. The SGP also allows programs to partner with IU IPE and combine expertise to develop quality learning experiences, assessment strategies, and scholarship opportunities. Finally, the program prioritizes the funding of initiatives that can help address Indiana’s health priorities.” – Dr. Zach Weber.

The first IU IPE SGP awardee was Dr. Margaret McNulty, whose submission, Development of the Medical Education OneHealth Workshop (MEOW) Event, is the first example of an IPE program affiliated with IU IPE that incorporates considerations of zoonotic illnesses, a broader One Health context, and veterinary medicine learners. This event is an excellent example of the type of new initiative created through this program, which can include opportunities to incorporate new topics and/or different learner groups into meaningful IPE experiences.

The IU IPE SGP is open to full-time Indiana University faculty (tenured, tenure track, and clinical track) from Schools represented by University Clinical Affairs and full-time faculty from partnering institutions who participate in TEACH. Faculty from partner institutions must partner with an eligible IU faculty member who will serve as principal investigator. Associate (part-time/adjunct) and visiting faculty may be included on proposals but may not serve as the principal investigator.

To apply for funding, faculty must submit applications to the IU IPE through the submission portal (https://go.iu.edu/4shi). Submissions must describe learning experiences involving students from at least two (2) professions participating in the TEACH curriculum. The complete proposal evaluation criteria and submission guidelines list are available on the IU IPE SGP webpage.

IU Interagency and Interprofessional Education Initiative Summer 2022 Event

On May 26th, the Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center (IU IPE) teamed up with the IU Center for Rural Engagement and other community leaders to present the IU Interagency and Interprofessional Education Initiative (IIEI).

This event was attended by over 50 students from the IU Schools of Social Work, Education, Nursing, and IU Police Cadets. They spent their day working through a series of workshops designed to confront issues presented in their chosen professions.

Members of IU faculty and staff like Dr. April D. Newton, Deborah Getz, Sergeant Pablo Pesa, and Nick Voyles were joined by Indiana Center for Recovery’s Jackie Daniels and consultant Eric Harris as presenters covering the issues of substance use disorder, the administration of Narcan, transfer of care, and human trafficking. Sessions had the stated goal of fostering interprofessionalism amongst attendees and recognizing signs of and responding to instances of opioid addiction, substance overdose, or instances of trafficking within the scope of their roles and responsibilities.

Once attendees registered, there were assigned seats with those from different professions to create interprofessional groups. The workshop sessions started with a facilitator giving background information and setting scenarios. Students were then asked to discuss relevant topics and work through scenarios with those in their assigned groups. They were then called upon to share the results of their conversations with all attendees. At times, it was as if the presenters became emcees while students spoke about the discussions held within their group.

The IIEI began as a part of the Grand Challenge: Responding to the Addictions Crisis and was formally known as the Grand Challenge Cadet Training Program. The IIEI will hold future sessions, which will be announced through the IU Center of Rural Engagement and IU IPE websites and social media.

Three from IU IPE - May 2022

Every month at IU IPE is an adventure, even when Summer Vacation is around the corner. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at three of IU IPE’s top stories from the month of May.

1. Interagency Interprofessional Education Initiative (IIEI)

On May 26th, over 50 students from Indiana University Nursing, Cadets, Social Work, and Counseling programs attended the second annual IIEI. This single-day event allowed students to participate with each other in workshops about the stigma of addiction, transfer of care, Naloxone, and human trafficking in Indiana.

This event was a joint effort made possible through a partnership with IU IPE and the IU Center for Rural Engagement. IU CRE featured the IIEI in an article titled “Serving beyond silos: Professional certificate program prepares IU students to address complex social issues”

2. Dr. April D. Newton earns another doctorate

Dr. Newton earned an extra “Dr.” to her name earlier this month when she successfully defended her dissertation “Interprofessional Team Simulation Further Enhances Collaboration Compared to Uniprofessional Team Simulation: A Mixed Methods Study” and was granted a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Interprofessional Healthcare Studies department at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

3. IU IPE says “Goodbye” to Dr. Laura Romito

Dr. Romito, the longest-tenured member of the IU IPE team, has accepted a step up in her home school. She has accepted the position of Associate Dean for Education & Academic Affairs at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. We wish Dr. Romito the best of luck and look forward to working alongside her on future interprofessional endeavors.
This month’s “Three From IU IPE” acts as a highlight reel showing a few IU IPEs’ many events and contributions to the interprofessional discussion.

1. TEACH

IU IPE’s innovative TEACH curriculum is many students’ first exposure to the world of interprofessional practice. TEACH events consists of students from different professions, and usually different universities, coming together to work as collaborative care units. TEACH spent the month of April in overdrive as we took events to eight of IU’s campuses and Ball State University for the Immersion Two phase of programming. We also held an Immersion One event at St Marys of the Woods and an online Exposure event. Over 1,300 unique students participated through the month of April.

2. Washington County Wellness Fail

On April 9th, IU IPE acted as a participant at the Washington County Wellness Fair, hosted by the IU Center for Rural Engagement. Over 30 community partners assembled at the Washington County YMCA in Selma, IN to provide an array of health services and dispense resources to attendees. Services included, but weren’t limited too, health screenings, Naloxone kits and overdose prevention trainings, medications reviews, and mental health resources.

3. Voices of IPE

IU IPE decided to celebrate Interprofessional Healthcare Month by creating the “Voices of IPE” campaign. We created a series of videos asking questions about how interprofessional education furthers a student’s understanding of their own profession, why IPE is necessary, and what IPE should accomplish. We were joined by students who participate in IPE events, the teachers who run those events, and international leaders in interprofessional health. You can view the “Voices of IPE” by visiting our Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, or by clicking HERE.

Voices of IPE

In celebration of National Interprofessional Healthcare
Month, the Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center (IU
IPE) is announcing the release of the “Voices of IPE” campaign.

Global leaders in interprofessional practice and education (IPE) join IU
faculty and students in lending their voices to a series of interviews about
why interprofessional education is so important. This series answers questions
about the goals of interprofessional education, how it deepens students'
understanding of their chosen professions, and the benefits students see from these
collaborative experiences. These videos are not deep dive documentaries into
IPE; they are short informational pieces told by those who create and participate
in interprofessional activities.

Participants include Dr. John Gilbert, founding chair of the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative, Dr. Shelley Cohen Konrad, director of the
University of New England's Center for Excellence in Collaborative Education, Dr.
Jim Ballard of the University of Kentucky's Center for Interprofessional and Community Health Education, Johanna Dahlberg of Interprofessional.Global and many
others.

The “Voices of IPE” celebrates interprofessional education
and its role in student development. IPE provides a base that enriches students’
understanding of collaborative care as they begin their social and health care
careers. It adds shape to students’ view of their own knowledge and expertise.
It demonstrates how different professions work in unison with clients/patients
to achieve better overall health outcomes.

These interviews have been made available via IU IPEs’
social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. The playlist
above contains each segment from the "Voices of IPE."

If March taught the IU IPE crew anything, it’s that being busy doesn’t always mean making an exciting video. But please, don’t be fooled by the lack of visuals; IU IPE has been busy readying itself for a productive month. April is the official Interprofessional Healthcare month, and this video is a behind-the-scenes look at how IU IPE will spend it. One cannot be effective in efforts to transform healthcare and build a culture of collaboration without taking the time to be deliberate about their next move. With that in mind, let’s think of March as a deliberate month.

1.	On March 25th, the IU IPE team packed
up and headed to Bloomington’s new(ish) Health Sciences Building. Students from
Audiology, Nutrition and Dietetics, and athletic training participated in a
simulated situation where they worked with standardized patients to create
wellness plans.

2.<span style="text-indent: -0.25in; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-family: "Times New Roman";">
IU IPE Assistant Dean for Education, Dr. Zach
Weber, leads a regular meeting of the IU IPE Curriculum Committee. This group comprises
representatives from each of IU IPE’s stakeholder schools. These meetings are a
regular chance to review suggestions for new curriculum and brainstorm new
avenues for IU IPE to explore. They can also play an essential part in reviewing
faculty applications for the IU IPE Seed Grant Program.

3.<span style="text-indent: -0.25in; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-family: "Times New Roman";">
Meetings aren’t unusual for the IU IPE TEACH Team. These weekly assemblies give the team a chance to review the goals and
expectations of TEACH programming. With thirteen sessions happening in person
on eight of IU’s campuses, it’s safe to call April a busy month. And while
there was plenty of work to be done, March also held a cause for celebration
amongst the TEACH team. It marked the first time, in over two years, they held
the weekly meeting in person.[No text in field]

IU IPE Celebrates IPE Month

April is interprofessional education (IPE) month, and the
Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center (IU IPE)
will spend the month promoting IPE and collaborative care through a variety of
means.

We will be sharing a “Voices of IPE” video series featuring IPE practitioners,
thought leaders, and students on our social media. These videos will ask those
most closely involved why IPE is crucial to future professionals and how it
helps form their education.

The IU IPE team will also spend the month of April traveling
Indiana as they hold thirteen TEACH events across eight different campuses. One
additional TEACH event will be conducted in a virtual environment. These events
promote collaborative practice by allowing students to act as part of an
interprofessional team while meeting with standardized patients.

On April 9th, the IU Center for Rural Engagement presents
the Washington County Wellness Fair. IU IPE is one of over 30 different
university and community partners who have worked together to organize this event.
It will have free access to health screenings, mental health and community
resources, Naloxone kits and overdose prevention training, screenings for
children, and more. The Washington County Wellness Fair will be open 10am–3pm
at the Washington County Family YMCA Campus.

Then, on April 23rd, IU IPE partners with the IUSchool of Dentistry and the IU/Methodist Family Medicine Center to provide
comprehensive health and dental exams at the interprofessional Well-Child and
Oral Health Clinic. This clinic allows dental, dental hygiene, family medicine
residents, and physician assistant learners to work in teams with children and
their caregivers to improve oral health care and overall health.

The National Academies of Practice initially declared April Interprofessional
Healthcare Month at the 2016 Forum. You can read and share their official proclamation
by visiting the National Academies of Practice website.

Three From IPE - February 2022

1. IPE Certificate Series Returns to Bloomington

On Feb 23rd, 30 students from education, social work, public health, criminal justice, and nursing attended the 3rd IPE Certificate Series session of the 21/22 academic year. The Trauma-Informed Care Workshop, led by John M. Keesler of the IU School of Social Work and Alex Purcell of the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington, gave attendees an understanding of the underlying principles of trauma-informed care through engaging in small group activities to demonstrate their application in diverse settings.

The IPE Certificate Series wrapped up with the Improving Social Justice Self Identity workshop on 3/1.

2. Dr. Laura Romito holds faculty development sessions

Interim Associate Dean, Education and Academic Affairs of the IU School of Dentistry, and IU IPE Assistant Dean of Faculty Development and Engagement, Dr. Laura Romito, held the first TEACH Exposure training session on February 17th. Campus-specific and university-wide faculty development sessions are scheduled throughout March and April. You can find those dates and register on our events page.

3. Dr. Barbara Maxwell presents to Project ECHO

Department’s work and team members accomplishments.

1.	TEACH returns for Spring 2022

One January 13th, IU IPE held it’s first event of the Spring 2022 semester. Over 80 students made their way into IUPUI’s Hine Hall to take part in an Immersion 1 opportunity. During this hour and forty-five minute event, six facilitators helped our learners take a deep look at how they interact with each other and with their patients as they continued down the path toward collaborative care.

2.	Dr. Brittany Daulton Published
IU IPE’s Director of Evaluation, Dr. Brittany Daulton collaborated with others on a study of nursing students. The paper, published in Vol 1 Issue 1 of Nurses Forum, was meant to examine if an educational intervention could be effective for improving collaborative habits amongst prelicensure nursing students.

“Students reported the highest level of agreements wit the statement that ‘all voices on the ream are heard and valued’”

The paper can be found at the following link: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/nuf.12655

3.	Dr. Barbara Maxwell interviewed
The IU School of Dentistry interviewed the Director of IU IPE, Dr. Barbara Maxwell in their faculty newsletter. Dr. Maxwell was asked about the future direction of IU IPE and what we hope to accomplish. You can read the interview on page 7 of Volume 10, Issue 1 of Office of Faculty Affairs.

The primary purpose of the program is to foster the development of interprofessionalism among participants. There will be four workshops each academic year—two in the fall semester and two in the spring. To earn the certification of completion, participants must complete three of four workshops.

For the 2021 fall semester, we will be offering the following workshops:

Human Trafficking in Indiana. Deb Getz, M.S., Re.D, CYC-P, a Clinical Associate Professor at the Indiana University School of Public Health, is our presenter. This workshop prepares students to outline types of human trafficking, notice red flags that indicate trafficking, and identify your role in preventing human trafficking in our state. The workshop takes place on Wednesday, October 13th, from 7:00-8:30 at the Indiana University School of Education building room 2140. Students can register at the following link – https://go.iu.edu/42Ky

Beginning this fall, students and faculty will see increased programming options and more built-in flexibility to TEACH.

This enhanced TEACH curriculum will continue to consist of 3 phases: Exposure, Immersion, and Entry-to-Practice. These experiences will still encompass the Interprofessional Education Competency domains of Roles and Responsibilities, Values /Ethics, Interprofessional Communication, and Teams/Teamwork. One of the most significant changes in these phases will be the removal of "Anchor" sessions.

The Exposure phase will now be an online experience. Allowing student and facilitator flexibility and the opportunity for students to work with those they would otherwise never interact with from across the state.

The Immersion Phase will provide a menu of experience options for learners to practice skills in the IPE competency domains with learners of partner professions as selected by their programs. These options offer greater professional relevance for participating students.

The Entry-to-Practice Phase uses a toolkit to assist programs and Schools in identifying the most relevant and real-world collaborative experiences. This phase will capitalize on the existing capstone, clinical rotations, or community-based experiences and provide practicum opportunities for learners to apply and be assessed on learned collaborative skills in an interprofessional context.

All TEACH programming will be vetted through the IU IPE Center's new Interprofessional Education Curriculum Committee, comprised of stakeholders from the participating health professions. In addition, all TEACH programming will receive feedback provided by a Student Advisory Committee composed of learners from participating health professions schools. These Committees will enable faculty and students to voice their ideas, concerns and provide input on the TEACH program for continuous quality improvement in IU's interprofessional education and practice offerings.

These changes result from a 5-year program evaluation to review student and faculty outcomes of the TEACH curriculum and assess the effectiveness of the IU IPE organizational structure. The review was conducted by a nine-member Health Sciences Evaluation Team representing each of the IU health sciences schools.

IU IPE Announces Seed Grant

The Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center (IU IPE) is excited to announce the creation of the IU IPE Seed Grant Program (SGP). The SGP is worth up to $5,000 of matchable monies and will be awarded by December 1, 2021.

The SGP is a way for IU IPE to provide faculty with funding, consultation, and support to develop and implement new educational programming into the existing statewide IPE Team Education Advancing Collaboration in Healthcare (TEACH!) curriculum.

TEACH! is an interprofessional curriculum offered to health profession students across nine Indiana University campuses. This interactive programming engages students across multiple health disciplines by creating opportunities that emulate real-world, team-based scenarios. By producing team-based curricula, students from different disciplines learn to collaborate and while improving patient health outcomes.

“…we anticipate that the expertise of the faculty across our partner schools and programs collaborating on SGP proposals will generate new, real-world, competency-based learning experiences. We hope that the SGP will benefit students and faculty by providing more options for learners to engage in interprofessional experiences while also creating an opportunity for faculty engagement and scholarship in IPECP.” - Dr. Laura Romito.

To apply for funding, faculty must submit applications to the IU IPE between August 1 and September 15, 2021. Submissions must describe learning experiences involving students from at least two (2) professions participating in the TEACH! Curriculum. A complete list of proposal evaluation criteria and submission guidelines is available on the IU IPE SGP webpage.

IU IPE Returns to In-Person Events

On May 26th IU IPE returned to in-person events with fifty-four students and eight presenters for the Cadet Training Certificate Series. Students from Nursing, Criminal Justice, Social Work, and the IU Police Cadets descended upon the new IU Health Sciences Building to participate in workshops and listen to lectures.

This event was an opportunity for all in attendance to receive the Grand Challenge: Addictions Certificate in a single day. Typically, earning this certificate requires students to attend three different workshops during a single academic year.

Students participated in our Transfer of Care workshop, Naloxone training, and the Stigma of Addiction workshop before participating in the Children of Parents Living with Substance Abuse Disorder and Motivational Learning presentations. Event presenters included organizer Alex Buchanan, Jackie Daniels of the Indiana Center for Recovery, Melanie Vehslage of the Monroe County Department of Health, doctoral student Lauren Adams of Indiana University School of Education, and Paige Young, Emily De Costa, Kinsley Couturier, and Christie Clayton, all of the Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center.

Students have been asked to fill out response forms to confirm their participation in the Cadet Training Certificate Series. They are currently being reviewed, and certificates will be distributed. Students who needed to leave early will be contacted with instructions on how they can complete training and receive their certificates.

Newton from the Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center (IU IPE). The interview covers how NAP and IU IPE can use telehealth to expand collaborative healthcare while improving health outcomes for all involved and the role Indiana University plays in the expansion of interprofessional education.

When asked what role interprofessional education and research play at Indiana University, Dr. Newton said, “We really have, not one pandemic that is in play, but three…” in reference to COCID-19, global opioid abuse, and mental health issues “and Indiana University is very intertwined with all three.” Referencing the universities work on a COVID-19 vaccine, the Grand Challenge: Addictions, and work in the mental health field.

Dr. Romito added, “We’re preparing learners to work collaboratively, across professions and systems, and sectors, so that when they graduate, they’ll be ready for collaborative practice.”

Dr. Romito is a distinguished fellow of the NAP Dental Academy, Dr. Newton is a distinguished fellow of the Physical Therapy Academy.

IU IPE’s goal is to take the big, somewhat vague, subjects of interprofessional practice (IPP) and education (IPE) and distill them down into digestible pieces. Those new to the concepts of IPE and IPP, and those who are already familiar with them, should come away from these episodes with a deeper understanding of how IPP and IPE work and why they’re necessary for the healthcare field.

Each episode consists of interviews with individuals from all over health professional fields. One week there may be a pharmacist, and the next week a social worker. IU IPE’s hope is that listeners come away from each episode with the understanding that interprofessional collaboration isn’t just working with others who practice in the same field, but working with everyone a patient needs to see and acting as a team for the betterment of the patient and providers.

The name IPE 10×10 refers to the fact each season consists of 10 episodes which run around 10 minutes each. The podcast was created to be quick and accessible. Season 1 is looking at all aspects of interprofessional collaboration. The first episode features IU School of Nursing – Bloomington’s very own Dr. Deanna Reising and Dr. Jeanne Johnston from the Center for Rural Engagement. Other episodes feature guests from the Purdue University College of Pharmacy, the Indiana Addictions Issues Coalition, and more.

IPE 10×10 is available through all major podcast distributors and directly through Anchor.fm. It’s hosted by David Plough and produced by Alex Buchannan. Every week, clips that were edited for time will be added to IU IPE’s social media profiles on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Dr. Webers’ submission was based on the implementation of a new required, sequential, and longitudinal IPE curriculum for Purdue College of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students. This curriculum was made possible through close collaboration with the IU IPE Center and the implementation of the TEACH! Curriculum as a critical part of the College’s IPE sequence. Overall, this new IPE curriculum provides a foundation for Purdue PharmD students to learn with, from, and about other healthcare learners on a scale that had never previously been done in the College, nor by other Purdue health science-based programs.

“I feel particularly proud to receive this award as it recognizes a culmination of years of hard work to bring innovative, interprofessional learning opportunities to every PharmD student in the College. It also highlights the success of the partnership between Purdue College of Pharmacy and the IU IPE Center, without which, this award would not have been possible. I’m honored to have had the opportunity to demonstrate what successful implementation of interprofessional education can look like.” – Dr. Zach Weber

This annual award is sponsored by the Class of 1922 alumni and is intended to honor either a faculty member, graduate student, or administrative professional staff member who has improved students’ educational experiences. Its focus is to promote innovative teaching practices that improve learning.

Dr. Friesth became a member of the IU community as a doctoral student in the nineties. After receiving her PhD, she continued her career in academia and returned to IU in 2006. As a faculty member of IU’s School of Nursing (IUSON), Dr. Friesth has played a pivotal role in elevating the curriculum with the use of various learning technologies and simulation practices.

In 2006, Dr. Friesth joined the IU School of Nursing as a Clinical Associate Professor and the Director of Learning Resources. The moment she stepped onto the IU campus as a faculty member she began impacting those around her. Dr. Friesth worked closely with the architects and construction team, representing IUSON during the building phase of the Resource Center for Innovation in Clinical Nursing Education (RCICNE) a state-of-the-art learning lab that supports the mission of IUSON. This $2.1 million-dollar project saw the extensive, 10,000-square-feet renovation of the third floor at the IUSON building. As a leader of this project, Dr. Friesth helped transform the space into a learning lab for faculty and students. The lab has a practice area, which contains 10 cubicles that resemble an acute care hospital room. Additionally, it has six physical exam rooms, similar to what you would encounter in a Nurse Practitioner or physician’s office. Lastly, the lab has four simulation rooms. The lab opened in May 2008 and continues to be an essential learning space for nursing students and faculty.

In addition to IUSON’s renovation, Dr. Friesth was involved with the construction of Fairbanks’ 30,000-square-feet simulation center. IUSON, IU School of Medicine, and IU Health were partners in the simulation center’s development and build. Though the size between the two spaces varied, Dr. Friesth’s leadership and insight helped Fairbanks build a robust learning lab that trains and equips health sciences students with the skills they need to be successful clinicians. Ever since the construction, Dr. Friesth has remained involved. Initially, she was a member of the Operations team for five years and then transitioned into an Executive Board member role. Dr. Friesth is one of two members from the original development and build team who actively serves on the Fairbanks Simulation Center Executive Board.

With Dr. Friesth’s expertise in learning technologies, she serves as the Co-Director for the Encouraging Learning, Innovation and Technology Excellence (ELITE) Center at IUSON. Dr. Friesth focuses on creating and developing new technologies for faculty to facilitate distance learning. She wrote a book chapter, “Teaching and Learning at a Distance,” in Diane Billings and Judith Halstead’s, Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty (Sixth Edition). This book is most selected for the Master’s in Nursing Education curriculum across the country. With Dr. Friesth’s dedication and expertise, she has been involved with two Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grants related to distance education instruction. Additionally, Dr. Friesth works with doctoral students who are interested in this field of distance education, active learning strategies, and simulation as a Dissertation Committee Chair or Member.

Dr. Friesth’s leadership extends beyond the IU community. She was invited to be a faculty member with Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Leadership Academy. Dr. Friesth was a member for six-years running cohorts of typically, junior faculty members through a leadership program. This program was not only open to faculty members within the U.S. but also internationally. The focus of the program was to empower junior faculty members to be successful in their careers and to be positioned well to assume leadership roles. Through this program, Dr. Friesth was not only able to share about her experience but it also gave her better insight into her own leadership. She noted, “It was a great opportunity for me to help and give back to junior faculty. But then, the take-back was I grew myself.” Dr. Friesth has held various leadership roles at IU, specifically at the university-level, such as the technology committee for many years. She commented that these roles have been memorable because she is able to step out of her nursing silo and connect with other colleagues at IU.

Though her role at the IPE Center is new, interprofessional education and practice is not. Early in her career as a staff nurse, specifically in oncology and stem cell transplant field, she worked on high functioning teams. Dr. Friesth said, “All long I have been a very big advocate for interprofessional team-based care. It’s just the nature of my practice and has been an outgrowth of the work I have been able to engage in at the university.” By having such interprofessional practice experience, Dr. Friesth’s insights to IU IPE’s foundational curriculum, TEACH!, will be invaluable.

As IU has started its academic year in late August, Dr. Friesth looks forward to working with stakeholders involved in interprofessional practice and education across the state of Indiana. Increasing engagement will allow IU IPE to continue to deliver the highest quality curriculum and practice opportunities to students and faculty. With an academic year looking different than ever before, Dr. Friesth noted, “At the end of the day we’d all like to know we make a difference. I would like IPE to have that impact on our students, and they walk away excited about team-based care and understand the impact on patient safety.”

Dr. Friesth and the rest of IU IPE looks forward to working closely with students, faculty, and staff across the state to deliver valuable and impactful experiences.

Meeting rooms were being reserved. Standardized patients (i.e. trained actors portraying patients) were being trained. Rosters of over 1,500 health profession students were being collected. Faculty members were attending facilitator development training preparing for the event. Canvas modules were being created and updated with content. The list goes on.

But like most, the learning environment drastically changed on March 10th when IU President Michael A. McRobbie sent a university wide-letter noting the suspension of in-person classroom teaching until April 6th. IU IPE was faced with a difficult decision, because the simulation learning events were to start on April 8th, two days after campus planned to re-open. With such a fluid situation, would IU IPE be ready to implement face-to-face events?

In anticipation of a University community call to action as an early response to the impending COVID-19 pandemic, IU IPE faculty and staff met on March 11 to discuss the next steps. The team was committed to developing a plan to ensure the health profession learners would be able to complete their interprofessional learning in a safe, secure, and protected environment. Many variables were uncertain – including the projected magnitude and length of IU’s COVID-19 response. With so many “ifs”, the team decided that the best course of action was to create a simulation in the online space in case face-to-face instruction did not resume. And sure enough, on March 15th, President McRobbie announced that face-to-face instruction was suspended for the rest of the Spring semester; further, it was to be extended over the summer.

In response to the uncertainty, the Executive Director of the IU IPE Center, Dr. Andrea Pfeifle stated, “It was both invigorating and frightening to think about redesigning a curriculum built specifically to teach communication and best practices for interprofessional collaboration so that it could happen in a virtual, asynchronous environment. But IU faculty and staff were absolutely committed to delivering key elements on time and with high standards for our learners.”

And so, the countdown began.

Because simulation is grounded in experiential learning, IU IPE was faced with the challenge of how to create meaningful, interactive experiences for students online. Further, IU IPE had to be conscious that as part of IU’s early response, learners were given an extended Spring Break which shortened the time period to deliver instruction before the end of the school year; thus, the simulation learning event had to take place in a week and a half window in early April.

IU IPE had 12-working days to develop, create, and implement a simulation-based event online for 1,500 health profession students across the state of Indiana. Everyone hit the ground running with no time to waste.

Dr. Brittany Daulton, IU IPE’s Director of Curriculum Development and Research, gathered the team to identify what resources it did and did not have in order to make the best decision on how to move forward. Dr. Daulton led the curricular and implementation efforts for this event.

Dr. Daulton shared, “As a team, IU IPE is committed to providing valuable interprofessional learning experiences for students. Although COVID-19 threw many challenges our way, we were willing to accept and overcome those challenges. COVID-19 forced us to combine our collective expertise and experiences to create an effective learning space; further, students across Indiana were expecting to complete the last event of TEACH! curriculum in Spring of 2020. Thus, it was important to us that we created a comparable experience that met the same objectives as other face-to-face events as well as meet the same standards of quality standards.”

First, because this was a patient-based case simulation, IU IPE began refining the patient case used as the basis for the event. IU IPE included elements of COVID-19 into the patient case to reflect a realistic, yet challenging, situation for the health profession learners.

Next, the team brainstormed ways to ensure learners had the opportunity to work with one another in real-time. Do we create hundreds of breakout rooms in Zoom and have one live session? Do we have multiple live sessions to accommodate all learners? Do the learners take the initiative to set their own date and time to meet? What platform should the learners use? What assignment should the learners work on and discuss during their huddle? These were just some of the questions considered as to how the students might engage with one another.

IU IPE decided to let the students take the initiative to plan and set their own time to meet as a group via FaceTime, Zoom, WebEx, Google Hangouts, etc. Over the course of the event, about 300 groups of learners coordinated a time to meet.

In true collaboration, IU IPE worked hand-in-hand with the IU Health Simulation Center to provide interactive video elements with a standardized patient, and the IU Bloomington’s Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) to build a user-friendly Canvas site to host all content, instructions, and assignments for the learners. Further, all IU IPE staff and faculty were involved in some capacity, whether it was sending communications, hosting virtual office hours via Zoom, and responding to learners’ questions via email.

The event was live from April 1st through April 10th. The students had to complete pre-work activities via Canvas, meet virtually as a team to discuss the patient and develop a care plan, and turn in a written assignment as a group.

A rising third-year IU Occupational Therapy learner, Cara Bloom, shared, “I felt thankful to have a smooth experience with Anchor 4 being online rather than in-person. I was lucky to have committed group members who were very responsive to setting up a time to meet and remaining positive about completing the Anchor over Zoom instead of face to face. It was helpful to be able to meet with our group at a time convenient for us all, and each group member was respectful of others’ time.”

Another student, a rising third-year IU medical student, shared, “As a rising MS3, I completed IPE Anchor 4 online this year. I found the Canvas page to be well organized and easy to follow; I understood the goals and expected deliverables. My group used Zoom to meet and collaborated on worksheets through Google Drive. These are resources that many of us have utilized since undergraduate, and therefore we were comfortable coordinating our meeting without explicit directions from the IPE staff. I liked that Anchor 4 was online because it gave groups more freedom to choose when to meet. Additionally, our group kept our online meeting just as engaging as an in-person meeting by turning on our video and audio for the whole time. In past IPEs, we were often on a tight 2 – 3-hour schedule and conversations were cut short as we moved through the programming. However, because the online IPE was strictly student-driven, we were able to discuss one topic for as long as we wanted in order to cover the material. In summary, I enjoyed completing the IPE online for both the convenience of meeting online and for the ability to pace ourselves when working through the worksheets.”

The student-portion of the event was closed; however, it was time to get the health profession faculty members involved. In the in-person event, faculty members would function as facilitators; so, to continue with the same model, they would be included in the online space in the same capacity.

As others worked on the learner-facing module, Dr. Laura Romito, the IU IPE Associate Dean for Faculty Development, was busy developing a process and building content to train facilitators on their responsibilities and duties. Content was added to a facilitator development Canvas page, a podcast was created, and virtual office hours were hosted. Dr. Romito and IU IPE wanted to make the facilitation process as valuable as possible.

The facilitators’ role was to review students’ work together and provide them with feedback that would be useful to them going forward as interprofessional collaborators in their future work.

A facilitator, Dr. Jeanne Johnson, a Clinical Associate Professor of Gerontology Education at IU Bloomington, stated, “I enjoyed being part of the team that developed this online IPE event. It was a valuable experience for both faculty and students. Students were able to apply the teamwork, communication, and collaboration skills they learned through participation in IPE events in a timely and relevant situation that clearly demonstrated the value of each profession in tackling the pandemic.”

The event successfully concluded on April 22nd.

Even though the event did not take place in its ideal form, Dr. Daulton saw significant value of this activity in the online space. Dr. Daulton stated, “In the end, we were able to provide a quality and collaborative learning experience, even in the online environment. We took this opportunity to re-design our learning management system site and focus on COVID-19 restriction and telehealth. The changes we implemented had a positive effect on students’ reactions and learning; further, we plan to integrate these changes in future events. Our data provides evidence that students were satisfied with their learning experience online and that the learning outcomes did not change from the live to online environment. Our team is very proud of the outcome, and how we banded together to meet the challenges of COVID-19.”

To highlight the success of the event as well as the design process, Drs. Pfeifle, Daulton, Weber, and Romito were invited to host a webinar with The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education in its “Connecting at the Nexus: COVID-19” web series. The webinar was held on April 23rd at 2:30PM EST, and the recording can be found by CLICKING HERE.

Though COVID-19 threw some wrenches into the original event plans, IU IPE has found ways to overcome them and to keep the work moving forward. Now, more than ever, we need to work together in interprofessional teams to address the ever-changing challenges and ultimately to overcome this pandemic.

Launches New, Online, Curriculum to 1,500+ Students

On April 1st, the IU Interprofessional Practice and Education Center (IU IPE) began hosting over 1,500 students for their Anchor 3 and 4 curricular events. Three weeks ago, these events were to be face-to-face experiences where students would meet with simulated patients (actors playing the role of a person with health issues) and work as a team to help the patient through their issues.

This marks the first time so many students have had a chance to experience IU IPEs interprofessional learning curriculum online. Transiting from in-person events to a virtual experience took effort, resources, and time. IU IPE had to create all-new case studies for this online environment. Resources from the IU Health Sim Center were utilized to create new videos featuring simulated patients dealing with health issues during a time of social distancing and the Department of Instructional Systems Technology created a new Canvas page to deliver this immersive experience.

TEACH! Curriculum Director, Brittany Daulton, lead the efforts to ensure these future healthcare professionals were able to get this interprofessional experience.

“As a center, we are committed to delivering quality educational experiences to health professions students across the state of Indiana. Although COVID-19 has introduced new challenges in accomplishing this mission, our team gathered around our strengths and resources to deliver TEACH! experiences online, on time, and in a meaningful way.” – Brittany Daulton, PhD

This change was implemented as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 11th IU IPE held their last in-person meeting to brainstorm changes so learners would be able to complete the required TEACH! Curriculum while still practicing social distancing. Anchors 3 and 4 are open April 1st-April 10th. Responses will be reviewed by a group of nearly 150 facilitators between April 13th-22nd.
