Indiana University School of Medicine believes that honoring outstanding teaching, research and service is an important part of our culture.

Consider nominating colleagues for the awards below. Awards are listed in order of their nomination deadlines.

  • Trustees' Teaching Award (Jan. 9)

    The Indiana University Board of Trustees recognizes faculty excellence in teaching through the Trustees’ Teaching Award. Excellence in teaching is the primary factor for selection. Approximately 50 outstanding IU school of Medicine teachers receive the award annually.

  • Excellence in Faculty Mentoring Award (June 10)

    The annual Excellence in Faculty Mentoring Award underscores the commitment to endorse mentoring within our faculty. The purpose is to recognize one clinical and one basic science faculty member each year who actively mentor other faculty members and learners. This award acknowledges the time and dedication faculty mentors devote to fostering colleagues' and learners' career development and academic success in research, education, service and clinical practice.

  • Inclusive Research Laboratory Award (June 10)

    The Inclusive Research Laboratory Award celebrates a faculty member who has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive and enriching laboratory environment, one who actively cultivates a culture where all members feel empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and collaborate freely. The recipient's mentorship, advocacy and equitable practices have created a vibrant, diverse and intellectually stimulating laboratory space that exemplifies the value of inclusive excellence. This award is funded through the Center for Inclusive Excellence.

  • Inspirational Educator Award (June 10)

    The Inspirational Educator Award recognizes faculty who inspire learners and motivate them to work hard and achieve more than they thought possible. Honorees are consistently noted for their teaching effectiveness, commitment to learning and passion for biomedical education. Long after their experience with faculty members of this caliber, learners recall an impact on their education and the passion for medicine and/or research demonstrated.

  • Outstanding Community Engagement Award (June 10)

    The Faculty Community Relations Committee (FCRC) Award for Outstanding Community Engagement recognizes and encourages exceptional community engagement (volunteerism, community-based learning or research, outreach, partnerships, curricular engagement and more) by IU School of Medicine faculty.

  • Scholar Educator Award (June 10)

    The Scholar Educator Award recognizes faculty who go beyond teaching and approach education in a scholarly manner. It celebrates teaching effectiveness, commitment to learning, educational leadership, scholarly activity related to teaching and learning, and passion for biomedical education.

  • Volunteer & Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award (June 10)

    The Volunteer & Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award (VFTA) honors the teaching and mentoring contributions of our volunteer and adjunct faculty. IU School of Medicine celebrates the scholarly contributions of volunteer and adjunct faculty at all nine IU School of Medicine campuses through the conferring of this award, presented annually.

  • Outstanding Faculty Commitment to Inclusive Excellence Award (July 24)

    The Outstanding Faculty Commitment to Inclusive Excellence Award recognizes faculty who demonstrate a commitment to the creation, promotion or advancement of diversity on our campuses. Support of the success of our community in the School of Medicine is of paramount importance. This award encourages and reinforces behaviors that support learner, faculty and staff success and the strategic efforts toward inclusive excellence. Awards are funded through the Center for Inclusive Excellence.

  • Outstanding Staff Commitment to Inclusive Excellence Award (July 24)

    The Outstanding Staff Commitment to Inclusive Excellence Award recognizes a professional staff employee who demonstrates a commitment to the creation, promotion or advancement of diversity on our campuses. This award encourages and reinforces behaviors that support learner, faculty and staff success, plus strategic efforts toward inclusive excellence. Awards are funded through the Center for Inclusive Excellence.

  • Campus-Wide Awards (fall)

    IU School of Medicine faculty are eligible for a variety of campus-wide awards in teaching, civic engagement, diversity, mentoring and research conferred by IU Indianapolis.

  • University Distinguished Professorship and Teaching Awards (Oct. 3)

    University-wide awards for distinguished professorships, teaching awards and outstanding service contributions are conferred by the Office of University Ceremonies.

  • Mark Brothers Lectureship Award (Nov. 18)

    The Mark Brothers Lectureship Award recognizes nationally and internationally renowned medical scientists of Asian descent. Created by Guey C. Mark, MD, and his wife Clara, the endowed lectureship honors Dr. Mark's brothers, who emigrated from Canton, settled in South Bend, Indiana, and built a successful restaurant business. The brothers had a high respect for higher education and supported their youngest brother, Guey, in his pursuit of a career in medicine. Dr. Mark was a member of the IU school of Medicine’s Class of 1954.

  • Steven C. Beering Award (Nov. 18)

    The Steven C. Beering Award honors an internationally recognized individual for outstanding research contributions to the advancement of biomedical or clinical science. The Beering Award honors IU School of Medicine's dean from 1974 to 1983, Dr. Beering, the youngest dean appointed to the School of Medicine. Eight of the past Beering Award recipients have become Nobel laureates, either before or after receipt of this award.
