The Interagency Initiative began as a collaboration between the IU Center for Rural Engagement and the IU Interprofessional Practice and Education Center in 2021. These experiences place IU Police cadets and students in the Department of Criminal Justice with the IU School of Public Health, School of Education, School of Social Work, and School of Nursing. Registration then opens to other students if slots are available.
This program fosters the development of interprofessionalism and collaboration amongst participants. It also intends to prepare each student who works within and across professions and sectors to recognize and respond to opioid addiction and substance overdose within the scope of their respective roles and responsibilities. An important responsibility for all participants to identify how to assist individuals and their family members.
Each Summer, this experience covers a variety of topics including the transfer of care of an individual who has suffered an overdose, Narcan training, the stigma of addiction, human trafficking, and identifying vulnerable populations.
