IU IPE’s Dr. April D. Newton is joined by former IU IPE team members Dr. Laura Romito and Kelsey Binion, as well as an interprofessional team from across Indiana University in publishing the tools and strategies implemented in the Comprehensive Pain Assessment Clinic (CoPAC).
In December of 2022, the Journal of Interprofessional Education and Practice will publish “Communication tools and strategies for interprofessional teamwork in a comprehensive pain assessment clinic in primary care” This look at CoPAC will give insight into what’s worked and what can be improved as CoPAC continues to go forward. The article gives in depth analysis of the communication techniques utilized in this team based care clinic.
CoPAC was founded in 2019 as part of the Indiana University Grand Challenge: Responding to the Addictions Crisis to provide a team-based approach to assessing the health, mental health, physical, social and spiritual concerns of people living with chronic pain. This interprofessional clinic brings together specialists, university staff, and students from 10 different professions to develop a functional and dynamic model of teamwork, including communication strategies to facilitate assessment and provide recommendations to patients.
