The Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center (IU IPE) is excited to announce “Voices for Healing: Life Beyond Genetic Disorders,” featuring Ted Meyer.
Mr. Meyer is the Artist in Residence at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine. For over two decades, Meyer has been creating a graphic yet beautiful depiction of people’s suddenly altered bodies and the resulting scars in an ever-enlarging collection of artworks entitled “Scarred for Life.” Scarred for Life continues to grow and now consists of almost 100 artistically enhanced monoprints taken directly from the scarred skin of his subjects. Each image – accompanied by a photographic portrait taken by Ted and a written story by his subject - tells a unique and intriguing story of medical crisis, resilience, and healing. Meyer is also a curator of the Hoyt Gallery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and will also show a selection of his favorite work by patient/artists that he has exhibited over the past six years.
The Voices of Healing series is scheduled from Monday, October 31st-Wednesday, November 2rd at IUPUI Tower Ballroom from 6:00-8:30 p.m. From 6:00-7:00 p.m., participants will have the opportunity to view Ted’s art exhibit, followed by a discussion on the importance of patient-centered care related to genetic disorders from 7:00-8:30 pm. These discussions will be led by individuals with genetic diseases who have overcome their disorders to inspire people worldwide.
Below you will find the theme for each session:
Session 1 – Scarred for Life featuring Ted Meyer
Monday, October 31st, 6:00-8:30 p.m., IUPUI Tower Ballroom
Since childhood, Ted Meyer has made art using the body as a starting point. Meyer, who has Gaucher's disease, turned to art to help him get through long hospital stays and to express the distress he felt from the constant pain of his disease. When medical advances offered Meyer respite from his condition, he kept making art but was unsure of the direction to take. A chance meeting with a woman who had suffered a spinal cord injury led to his new direction: the Scarred for Life project.

Session 2 - Don’t Be Afraid to Heal featuring Dominic Quagliozzi
Tuesday, November 1st, 6:00-8:30 p.m., IUPUI Tower Ballroom
Dominic’s work is primarily autobiographically and follows his health and medical experiences, having Cystic Fibrosis, and being a recipient of a double lung transplant. In keeping consistent with his body-centered patient experiences, he uses his body heavily throughout his work while stripping away privacy in attempts to bring out a more public dialogue about chronic illness and disability.
